Ōtautahi Christchurch-based craftsman Michael Gilling is the self-taught pair of hands behind central city studio and workshop XYLO. Combining a driving passion for Japanese craftsmanship and joinery methods with native and exotic hardwoods he's built a practise for the last decade around hand-crafting functional objects, bespoke furniture, and considered architectural fit-outs full of hand-cut elements that are a joy to discover.
Made to be lived with long-term, XYLO pieces have become known for developing a beautiful patina of human touch over time, taking on the impression of the households and people who own and use them in the hope that they'll be handed down to the next generation.
We visited Michael in his workspace - a wonderful collision of stacked raw materials, finished pieces and all stages in between - as he shared his favourite Everyday Needs pieces, objects that merge effortlessly with life both at home and in the workshop.
1. Enamel 2-Tone Kettle // Olive Drab
This brings back nostalgic memories of camping as a kid around Lake Mahinerangi, down in Otago. Dad boiling water with his old kettle and making us milo.
2. Onsen Saru // Hot Spring Bath Soak
After visiting Japan I would try anything to re-create the Onsen experience at home. It may be the minerals or the fact you’re on holiday but after a few weeks of soaking in an Onsen everyday, you can’t help but feel content. At the end of a long day of work, I find myself gravitating to a soak in the hot bath to relieve the work stress and fatigue.
3. Hip Roof Steel Toolbox // Silver
A classic feeling item. Practical storage and transport for lots of different tools. I’ve got a version that’s been passed down from my Grandad, all the scratches and dents are part of it's charm.
4. Birch Broom
I find the act of sweeping quite calming and satisfying. Contrasted against the shrieking sound of the vacuum cleaner, the quiet flicker of bristles on the floor is very pleasant. During a work day I’ve been sweeping the floor as a quick moment of calm and focus between tasks and jobs.
5. Nesting Bowl
A few years ago I got into making bread and learned the basics. I find it nice having a big, dedicated bowl for the process. I love the feel of handmade stoneware, the colours are very subtle and natural.
